Vasoff, Peter George

With great sadness we announce the passing of Peter Vasoff at his home after a brief illness on October 26th at the age of 60. Beloved son of Olga and George Vasoff, cousin of John Oseida , dear friend of Rosemary Helmer, and former student of Pickering College. Peter will be greatly missed by his adoptive family at the St. James Town Sailing Club in Toronto where he was a member for the past 35 years. Internment services to be held at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto on November 26th at 3:00 followed by Celebration of Life service at Toronto Sailing & Canoe Club, 1391 Lake Shore Blvd. West, Toronto, Ontario starting at approximately 4:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pickering College, Newmarket , Ontario in Peter’s name.

Burial Service

We invite you to attend a short service at Peter’s Graveside at Mount Pleasant Cemetery,

Plot No. 48 – 6045 located in the North East corner of the Cemetery. Peter will be buried with his father George at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Enter the Cemetery off Mt Pleasant Road and follow the white line on the road traveling east towards Bayview Ave. Turn left at the end of the road traveling north. Please note there is no car exit only a pedestrian exit from the Cemetery onto Bayview Avenue. Please see the attached map for details. The burial service will be conducted by the Reverend Betty Jordan.

INVITATION to Celebration of Life Reception

Following Peter’s burial Peter’s Family and the St. Jamestown Sailing Club will host a Celebration of Life reception starting at approximately 4:30 pm at the Toronto Sailing & Canoe Club where Peter was also a member for many years.

A formal program of remembrances and pictures will be presented followed by an opportunity for any present to share their favourite stories of Peter V as we all affectionately knew him.

Your attendance will be of great comfort to Peter’s spirit, his family and many other gathered friends.

St Jamestown Sailing Club – Tribute

St. Jamestown has advised Peter’s family that they have created a new award, the Peter Vasoff Race Management Trophy to be presented to the club member demonstrating excellence in Race Management. As we all know Peter was an excellent race manager whose skills were often called upon by the member clubs of the Outer Harbour Sailing Federation, the Lake Sailing Skiff Association, the Canadian Albacore Association, the Canadian Yachting Association and CORK: the Canadian Olympic Regatta Kingston.

Peter will be sorely missed the next time the starting signal sounds but likely standing by in spirit.

Mississauga St Michael’s Major’s Hockey Club – Tribute

After hearing the news of Peter’s passing the Majors paid a tribute to Peter and held a moment of silence just prior to their game last weekend. The Majors commented,

“Peter Vasoff has been a strong supporter of, and will be greatly missed by, the team, staff and fans of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors hockey club. ‘Pistol Pete’s’ puck toss winning record will forever remain a legend of our organization.

CAPTURE THE FLAG IS THIS SATURDAY (Not Friday)!

New Members’ Party (A.K.A. Capture the Flag!)
After the great success of the Capture the Flag game last year, we’ve decided toditch the after-party this year and play Capture the Flag, ALL NIGHT LONG!

What: A night to welcome and celebrate our new 2011 members!

When: Saturday, September 10th

Time: 8:00pm – Wee Hours of Morning…

Agenda:

8:00 – Dusk: Snacks and Mingling…

Dusk – Wee Hours of the Morning: Starting at dusk, we will arrange our teamsand head out to the battle grounds for the first annual game of CAPTURE THEFLAG! I’ve included details below as to how the game will be organized. While Ido encourage everyone to come play, for those who are less inclined, there willstill be music and snacks at the clubhouse all night long.

(NOTE: I will be making two teams, combining Existing Members and New Members – a great chance to get to know others! Also, if you want to participate,but aren’t necessarily too keen on running around in the dark, don’t forget that not everyone has to be an attacker. Defenders and Jail-Keepers are an important part of the game too!)
New Members: This is a great opportunity to meet other existing members and do some bonding over a little healthy competition!
Existing Members: This is a great opportunity to meet and welcome our newmembers to JTown, get a little fresh air, and engage in even MORE healthy competition! As always, I will need volunteers as well to help out, so please don’t hesitate to let me know if you can lend a hand.

CAPTURE THE FLAG:

• At dusk, both teams will meet at the territory border – competitor rules will beread and each team will retreat in to their respective territories to hide their flag, set up their “Jail” and devise a strategy.
• Once sufficiently dark, a horn will be blown to mark the beginning of the game.
• The game will end once one team has successfully captured the opposing team’s flag and returned to their own territory without having been tagged by a member of the opposite team.

Rules of Engagement:

• Hiding the Flag/Setting Up Jail/Strategy• The flag must be hung at head height and be visible from 20 yards away on at least one side. (NOTE: Once hidden, the flag cannot be moved – Also,guarding the flag is generally considered as poor sportsmanship and also reveals the location of your flag. We should aim not to post a guard within 10feet of the flag.)
• Split into attacker and defender groups within your team. Attackers and defenders can switch jobs as needed.
• Pick an area and mark a clearly defined border to serve as a jail

Playing the game

• Attempt to sneak across the border, find and capture the enemy flag, and then race back without being caught if you are an attacker.
• Hide around your flag or along the border and try to intercept and catch any opposing players who sneak across if you are a defender.
• Capture enemy players by tagging them while they are on your side of the border. Tagged players will be taken to “Jail.”
• Win by capturing the enemy flag and carrying it back to your side of the border.(Note: Once you capture the flag, you have to carry it across the border. You can’t throw the flag across. If you get tagged with the flag, the person who tagged you should bring the flag back to its original spot.)
• A horn will be blown when the winning team crosses the border with the other team’s flag.

Jail

• Captured players must obey their captor’s orders. They cannot yell information back to their side.
• Rescue teammates by sneaking across the border, finding the jail, tagging your teammate, then racing back across the border.
• Recapture players by tagging them again before they reach the border.

Tips!

• Dark clothing and a flashlight are a VERY good idea!
• THINK about where you hide the flag – You can either pick a great hiding spot, or put it in a deceptively open spot, where no one will think twice about it

The partying started early with the whitesail class jumping off the dock for a swim in the sweltering late afternoon. Frolicking in the water was revisited late in the night, check out the pictures

The talented band, Dear Reader, that instructor George Chenery is a member of, played classic songs by Jimi Hendrix as well as modern hits by The Black Keys and many more.

Guests this year were treated to Malpeque oysters, shucked by Tom Jehu, Pierre Ross and Almir Taveres. Alexis Mantell, Beata Gentere, and Katherine Browne organized the crowd wonderfully to make sure everyone got their lobster quickly. Robert MacDonald masterfully built the fire that he and Frank Loritz cooked the fresh Atlantic lobsters on. Clearly, cooperation and teamwork by all the volunteers (not just the ones mentioned) kept this tradition a success.

After dinner, the deck was transformed into a dance floor and everyone let loose to dance and enjoy the music. As guests danced the night away there were some brave souls who jumped off the dock to enjoy a midnight swim.

Those who had referred to this year’s Lobster Feast as “the major outer harbour social event of the season” were right in their predictions. Can’t wait until Lobster Feast 2012!

After Day 1 our own team of Allan Measor and Richard Piercey were in the lead with a one point advantage over 3 time world champions Barney Harris and David Byron. On day two they were still within one point before the last race and it was all about who would come out ahead in that one race. Barney did it again and won the regatta. Almost beaten by a Jtown team.
