St-Jamestown Sailing Club
March 2011
General
This document outlines the responsibilities and privileges of Albacore boat captains at the St-Jamestown Sailing Club. Please note that a captaincy does not equate to boat ownership; rather a boat captain is given racing privileges in return for repairing and maintaining a club boat. For the 2011 season, there may be only one captain per boat.
Responsibilities
Maintenance and Repair. A boat captain is required to keep their assigned boat in working order and in service so it can be used by the club members.
- The captain’s responsibility includes the boat, rigging, sails, and dolly. The jib pole is considered part of the standard rigging (J-Town will be responsible for the costs of any new pole systems for the 2011 season, as well as replacement of older systems that are lost or damaged).
- Responsibilities also include compliance with the Albacore class rules and safety equipment. This includes yearly buoyancy testing.
- When a boat is damaged and is taken out of service, it is the captain’s responsibility to repair it and return it to service within a reasonable amount of time.
Privileges
Racing. For racing, a boat captain gets first dibs on their boat provided they are drawn for the race(s) and show up before the cutoff time.
- If a boat captain does not sign up before the cutoff date, is not drawn for the race(s), or if they miss the cutoff time on the day of the race(s), they lose all rights to use their boat for that event.
- If a boat captain is not racing their boat, they have no say over who is allowed to use the boat for the race(s).
- Non-boat captains who wish to race will have access to any and all unassigned boats either via random draw or first come first served at the discretion of the race chair.
- If a captain’s assigned boat is out of service for an event, they enter the same pool as non-boat captains wishing to race.
Boat captains not fulfilling their maintenance/repair responsibilities or complying with the racing limitations may be removed by a committee consisting of a subset of the club executive. The fleet captain and race chair will be members of this committee, unless one of them is the boat captain of concern.
