JTown welcomes about 200 members, of all age, gender and origin. 60-70 new members join the club each year to learn to sail. JTown is a cooperative club, rooted in its social connections. JTown has no employees and is entirely volunteer-member operated. Members share boats, space, knowledge, resources and more. It often takes more than a shared love of sailing and commitment to a common set of rules to make our club operate smoothly. A strong culture of volunteering and mentorship is one way that JTown continues to thrive sustainably.
Each year, at the club's annual general meeting, JTown members have an opportunity to elect key volunteers to oversee the operations and management of the club. JTown refers to these volunteers as members of the board/executive. Below are the 12 members of the Executive/Board elected at the September 2024, annual general meeting:
Together these key volunteers help to coordinate volunteering by members who support the ongoing daily operations of the club. There are plenty of ways to get involved, but something that might make JTown different than many other co-operatives is that we do not track mandatory volunteer hours. Instead, the membership relies on the goodwill of all members to participate voluntarily.
In early 2025, the board/executive team voted in favour of piloting a new initiative to enhance engagement and make it easier for all members to get involved, by inviting all members to join one of 7 volunteer crews, each led by a member of the board/executive team. Recognizing that joining a club and immediately making 200 new friends can be a bit overwhelming, the team hopes that coordinating smaller groups of sailors around common volunteering interests will make it easier to get and stay engaged.
